Fashion Designing & Mental Health

In the vibrant world of fashion, creativity, and self-expression reign supreme. However, the impact of fashion designing extends beyond the realm of aesthetics. It delves into the sphere of mental health, offering a unique form of therapy that taps into the power of creativity. This blog post explores the intersection of fashion designing and mental health, shedding light on how the act of creating fashion can serve as a therapeutic tool.

Mental health is a pressing issue in India, with a significant portion of the population experiencing mental health issues. A Study found that most individuals suffered from neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform group of disorders. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health issues, with increased job losses, a jump in the divorce rate, and the generic nature of staying home leading to various mental health issues. In fact, around 18.29% of children with developmental disabilities and 25.48% of typically developing children were reported as sad, and 28.99% of children with developmental disabilities and 32.03% of typically developing children were reported as anxious according to a research. In such a scenario, finding therapeutic outlets is more important than ever.

Fashion designing, at its core, is a form of art. It’s a creative process that allows designers to express their thoughts, emotions, and identities. But beyond this, fashion designing can also play a significant role in mental health management. The process of creating, of bringing a concept to life, can be therapeutic. It can serve as a form of self-expression, a way to communicate feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the therapeutic potential of creativity in fashion designing, backed by scientific research and real-life examples. We will also explore how our college’s fashion designing courses can provide an avenue for individuals to tap into this therapeutic potential.

The Therapeutic Power of Creativity

Creativity is not just about producing art or coming up with innovative ideas. It’s a powerful tool that can act as a form of therapy, helping individuals manage stress, improve their mental health, and navigate the complexities of life. Engaging in creative activities stimulates our brain’s creative side, encouraging us to actively solve problems and manifest our ideas. This can be particularly beneficial in managing daily obstacles such as workplace stress, financial management, and relationship issues.

A study found that self-expression is central to mental well-being and mental health therapy. Art therapy offers a wide range of expressive mechanisms, allowing individuals to process their emotions when traditional therapies prove unsuccessful. For instance, a co-creative songwriting system was applied as a new form of therapy for those who had recently suffered the loss of a loved one, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of creativity.

Moreover, A study found that the co-design process in expressive textile arts had a positive impact on undergraduate students. The process involved ex-mentally ill persons, people with intellectual disabilities, subject lecturers, and undergraduate students jointly creating prototypes. This process allowed students to gain new knowledge and skills, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of creativity in fashion designing.

In the context of fashion designing, this therapeutic potential of creativity is particularly relevant. The act of designing and creating fashion items allows designers to express their thoughts, emotions, and identities, serving as a form of self-expression and a way to communicate feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words. In the following sections, we will delve deeper into how fashion designing can act as a form of art therapy and the concept of “enclothed cognition.”

The Process of Designing and Creating: A Journey of Self-Expression

Fashion designing is a creative process that involves more than just the creation of clothes. It’s a journey of self-expression, a way to tell a story, and a means to communicate one’s identity. From the initial concept to the final product, every step in the process of fashion designing offers an opportunity for self-expression.

Conceptualization

The first step in the process of fashion designing is conceptualization. This involves coming up with an idea or a theme for the design. It’s a chance for designers to express their thoughts, ideas, and inspirations. This could be anything from a personal experience, a piece of art that moved them, a historical period that fascinates them, or a social issue they feel strongly about. The conceptualization stage is where designers get to express their creativity and individuality.

Design Development

Once the concept is established, designers move on to design development. This involves sketching designs, selecting fabrics, and deciding on colors and patterns. This stage allows designers to express their aesthetic sensibilities and personal style. The choices they make in terms of colors, fabrics, and patterns reflect their personal taste and vision.

Construction

The final step in the process of fashion designing is construction. This involves sewing the garment together and adding finishing touches. The construction process is a chance for designers to express their attention to detail and craftsmanship. The quality of the construction reflects the designer’s dedication and passion for their craft.

The Benefits of Self-Expression in Fashion Designing

The process of designing and creating in fashion designing offers numerous benefits. Here are a few:

Emotional Well-being

Expressing oneself through fashion designing can have therapeutic benefits. It allows designers to process their emotions and express feelings that they might find difficult to put into words. This can lead to improved emotional well-being and reduce stress and anxiety.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

Creating a garment from scratch and seeing it come to life can be a huge confidence booster. It’s a tangible proof of the designer’s skills and creativity. This can lead to improved self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Communication

Fashion designing allows designers to communicate their ideas, beliefs, and values. It’s a form of non-verbal communication that can speak volumes about the designer’s identity and worldview.

Problem-Solving Skills

The process of designing and creating a garment involves solving numerous problems, from figuring out how to translate a design concept into a wearable garment, to overcoming technical challenges during the construction process. This can help improve problem-solving skills and foster a growth mindset.

Real-Life Examples and Case Studies

Real-life examples and case studies supply valuable insights into the therapeutic benefits of fashion designing. For instance, a research explored the use of art therapy methods for the social rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities. While the study does not specifically focus on fashion designing, it highlights the potential of art therapy methods, which can be applied in the context of fashion designing, to support social rehabilitation.

Another paper discussed the design of multi-functional beeswax-modified fashion garments for victims of acid attacks. The study found that the use of beeswax in designing these garments not only made them aesthetically pleasing but also supplied functional benefits to protect the skin from acid attacks. This shows that fashion designing can be used as a form of art therapy to support the healing and rehabilitation of individuals who have experienced trauma.

In another interesting case, a study explored the relationship between art therapy and psychopharmacology, highlighting how art therapy methods, including fashion designing, can be used in conjunction with medical treatments to support mental health and well-being.

These examples illustrate the diverse ways in which fashion designing can serve as a form of art therapy, providing therapeutic benefits to individuals from various backgrounds and with different needs.

Enclothed Cognition: The Psychological Impact of What We Wear

Understanding Enclothed Cognition

Enclothed cognition is a psychological concept that suggests the clothes we wear can influence our mental state, emotions, and performance. It’s the idea that our attire doesn’t just affect how others perceive us, but also how we perceive ourselves and our abilities.

The Influence of Our Attire

The clothes we wear, especially those we design ourselves, can have a profound impact on our mental state. For instance, wearing a well-tailored suit might make us feel more confident and competent, while wearing comfortable casual clothes might make us feel more relaxed and at ease. This is not just about comfort or style, but about how our attire aligns with our identity and the role we are playing at any given moment.

A study titled “Designing a high-efficiency teacher’s clothing for highly effective students” found that the color and design of a teacher’s clothing can affect students’ focus and perception. The study proposed simple designs and specific colors for teacher’s clothing that helped students to focus better. This is a clear example of enclothed cognition in action, where the attire of the teacher influenced the cognitive performance of the students.

The Power of Personal Design

When we design our own clothes, the impact of enclothed cognition can be even more profound. This is because the process of designing our own attire allows us to infuse our clothes with our personal identity, values, and aspirations. When we wear clothes that we have designed ourselves, we are not just wearing a piece of fabric – we are wearing a piece of ourselves. This can enhance our sense of authenticity and alignment, which can in turn boost our confidence, self-esteem, and overall mental well-being.
