Must Have Skills To Become a Fashion Designer

Every career requires a certain skill set that would make your job easier for you and can also help you achieve great heights in your career. Fashion is nothing different in that sense. While the field itself is highly creative and competitive, having certain skills handy can help you find your way.

In this blog post, we will cover certain skills that every aspiring fashion designer must develop. Developing these skills and perfecting them would help you become a successful fashion designer.

So, without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

1. Be Creative & Artistic

Being creative and artistic is a must for any fashion designer, but it’s crucial for those who want to be in charge of their own brand. Your designs need to look good on the runway, in magazines, and on social media. You can’t be afraid to experiment with your designs; in fact, you should expect that some of your ideas won’t work out as planned—that’s just part of the process!

If you’re not willing to take risks with your work or if you don’t think outside the box when designing garments (like experimenting with materials), then becoming a fashion designer may not be right for you.

2. Have Good Hand-Eye Coordination

One of the most critical skills that a fashion designer should have is good hand-eye coordination. You will be drawing and sketching, sewing and cutting fabric, and doing basic math in order to create your designs.

3. Have Knowledge of Illustration

You need to be able to draw, sketch and create your own designs. Some people think that being an illustrator is the same as being an artist, but it’s not. An illustrator has more skills than just drawing because they also have knowledge of illustration and 3D modeling.

You must know how to draw in order to create your own fashion designs or redesign someone else’s clothing line. If you don’t know how then there are many sites & fashion courses where you can learn.

4. Have Knowledge of Color & Fabric

Color is one of the most important elements in fashion design. It can make or break an outfit and play a big role in how your clothing will look on you. Fabric is also very important when it comes to creating garments that fit well and look good on people. Having knowledge about both can help you create better-looking clothes that are more flattering, feminine, and appealing to the eye! If you want to be successful as a fashion designer, then these two skills should be at the top of your list!

5. Be Able to Spot Trends in Fashion & Culture

To be a fashion designer, you should be able to spot trends in fashion and culture. You will also need to know how to use them in order to design new looks or products.

For example, if you notice that everyone is wearing red lipstick this month, then that could mean that it’s time for a new shade of red lipstick for everyone! Or maybe it’s just because there was an episode of The Bachelor where the lead character wore lipstick made from some sort of berries (I’m not really sure). However, if you were able to discover that this was actually just another way for women everywhere—including celebrities—to express their individuality as well as their love for each other via small gestures such as wearing red lips rather than blue ones like usual… then maybe we need more shades?

6. Be Able to Sketch Designs by Hand

  • Sketching by hand is a great way to get ideas out of your head and onto paper.
  • You can use a pencil, an eraser, and a ruler for this process.
  • A protractor can help you figure out how much space your design will take up on someone’s body or in an outfit if they are wearing it.
  • Compass will help you draw straight lines!

7. Have an Understanding of Color Combinations & Shading

You should also have an understanding of color combination and shading. Color combination is the process of layering different colors to create a more complex or subtle effect. When it comes to shading, this refers not only to how your drawings are shaded but also to how they are drawn. To understand more about color combinations, you can check out our blog on the psychology of colors.

Shading can be used in many ways:

  • To make your drawings look more realistic by creating shadows and highlights on them (which helps make them look like photographs)
  • To bring out certain parts of people’s faces while hiding others (to help make models look thinner or fatter)

Conclusion

If you have been thinking of becoming a fashion designer, then it’s time for you to start on your skill set. If you already have the talent, well and good. If you don’t, there is no need to be disheartened; there is no skill in this world that can’t be developed with consistency, patience & a mix of hard as well smart work.

There are a number of Fashion designing courses that could help you become a successful fashion designer while also enabling you to develop these skills through their curriculum. Here is a list of all the courses in case you are interested in pursuing fashion as a career.

To conclude, here is a tl;dr of the skills you need to have to become a successful fashion designer.

  • Be creative and artistic.
  • Have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Have knowledge of illustration, color, and fabric.
  • Be able to spot trends in fashion and culture, such as color combinations or shading that can be used in designing clothes for an individual or group of people (for example, if you’re designing a shirt for a man who likes wearing red t-shirts with black jeans).
